Andrew Geller was dubbed "the Happiness Architect," and it's simple to see why. His fanciful vacation homes of the 1950s and 1960s studded the coastlines of Long Island, Martha's Vineyard, and the Jersey Shore, with names like The Box Kite, The Bra, and The Reclining Picasso. They were largely made of wood and blended a contemporary focus in light, breeze, and functional living with creative form-making. In contrast to today's Hamptons megamansions, Geller's modestly scaled homes mirrored the summer leisure ideas of a generation more concerned with pleasure on the beach than showy exhibition. Beach Buildings, now available in paperback, contains over fifty of these vibrant houses in rarely seen vintage images and drawings.
