Everything in post-World War II America pointed to a promising future. Everything from vehicle design to architecture was influenced by blatant optimism and opulence, which gave design its larger-than-life planes and curves. An wide collection of hand-illustrated shop window designs from 1938 to 1950 serves as an excellent example of this occurrence in storefront design from the time.

These extravagant, frequently fantastical ideas for grocery stores, shoe stores, bakeries, and other businesses serve as a reminder of the days when American shoppers revered stores as hallowed temples. They are magnificent and even a little terrifying, just like the future itself. The drawings gathered for this special book show the attitude of a certain time in history when evaluated in retrospect. A large number of designs are included, as well as old black-and-white pictures of actual stores constructed in the same manner. Shop America provides a unique window into how commercial America envisioned itself in the mid-20th century.
