English painter Edward Burra (1897–1966) is well known for his depictions of the sordid side of urban life. However, as this interesting new monograph on his art illustrates, his interests were considerably broader and included watercolours, stage designs, still-life paintings, and landscapes. His singular perspective frequently conflicted with the mainstream art world, which led to his work being somewhat overlooked by histories of modern art. His work is now due for a reappraisal. This significant book is the first comprehensive monograph on Edward Burra and was written to go along with a significant exhibition of his paintings and drawings at Pallant House Gallery. It reproduces 100 important paintings, along with drawings, and a variety of fascinating contextual information. By putting Burra's work alongside that of the German Expressionists and other significant contemporaries and influences, it elevates him to the status of a significant player in the history of 20th-century art. This eagerly anticipated book will be warmly received by everyone interested in the work of this interesting renegade and chronicler of contemporary life.
