Greece is currently experiencing a financial crisis that is evident, especially in its capital, the formerly proud polis of Athens. Eirini Vourloumis investigated the subject of how a cultural identity shows itself when the future is absolutely unpredictable during her explorations of both public and private areas. The documentary photographer, who typically shoots news stories for outlets like The New York Times and Le Monde, saw that traditional structures continued to exist and were idealized in an almost archaic way.

Vourloumis offers odd and occasionally humorous images, such as one of the cafeteria at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where a Christmas stocking dangles from a plaid curtain, or the image of the shiny shoes of the taxman, or the depressing one of a section of the Library of Science and Technology where not a single book is left. The locations that Vourloumis has photographed have a distinctive style and mood, albeit no one is sure how long they will last.
