Studio Voices draws on the author's original research in the Artists' Lives audio archive at the British Library to examine the multifaceted experiences of modern and contemporary British artists in their own words. We are able to listen in on artists' life-story conversations as they discuss their creative practices and professional accomplishments, childhood memories, family life, relationships, and unexpected, incidental epiphanies of self-awareness in Michael Bird's fascinating oral history of the lives and working practices of artists over the last century. This fascinating work was culled from the vast and expanding archive of artists' interviews recorded since 1990.

The Artists' Lives project was started in 1990 as a component of National Life Stories, the British Library's national oral history repository.
