The remarkable tale behind Manet's picture of his sole student Eva Gonzalès, set against the larger context of female artists at the time

There was only ever one formal student of Edouard Manet (1832–1833), Eva Gonzalès (1849–1883). She was 19 when she entered Manet's workshop. Her father was a well-known novelist. At the Paris Salon of 1870, where Gonzalès debuted her own artwork for the first time and received favorable reviews, he painted her in the year they first met.

This book explores Manet's portrait in the context of women's artistic practice in nineteenth-century Paris, Gonzalès's development as a professional painter, and Manet's career in 1870. It is the first in a new series of Discover titles, in which a single work of art in the National Gallery's collection is reconsidered from a fresh perspective.

Discover Manet & Eva Gonzalès is a richly illustrated, in-depth analysis of Manet's portrait and gives a ground-breaking perspective on both artists by fusing fresh art historical research with interesting articles on women artists and their depiction in visual culture.
