The ambitious and relevant project by renowned artist Mark Bradford, Pickett's Charge, is chronicled in this gorgeously illustrated book. Eight new paintings cover a floor of the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. in a 360-degree experience that spans over 400 feet. The 1883 cyclorama created by Paul Philippoteaux to commemorate the Battle of Gettysburg, which is regarded as the pivotal turning point of the Civil War and, subsequently, of American history, served as the basis for Bradford's imposing display. The many layers of collaged paper that Bradford scraped through to reveal hidden textures and complexities include elements from Philippoteaux's paintings. This interaction between the past and present, between the legible and the eerily evocative, encourages a reexamination of history's traditional linear narratives.
