This book explores how British artists used architecture between 1900 and 1940, using and modifying Victorian studios while also commissioning new ones. It does this by looking at the studios and studio-houses they used. By doing so, it demonstrates how they came to terms with the past, invented new ways to be contemporary, worked with architects, and influenced the modernist movement. The book sheds light on how the studio environment articulated personal ideals, artistic affinities, and professional objectives through its examination of the physical surrounds of artistic activity during this time. It takes into account the studio's architectural design as well as the artist's work and daily life in the space as well as the market for contemporary art.
