Ben Nicholson (1894–1982) was a prolific and imaginative writer throughout his life. His unpublished letters, which were chosen and extracted here for the first time (along with published writings), demonstrate how Nicholson's aesthetic was woven into every facet of his daily life while also providing fascinating insight into significant events and encounters at various stages of the artist's career. These letters are supplemented by those written to some of the artist's closest friends and most dependable supporters, including Herbert Read, Adrian Stokes, Jim Ede, and Margaret Gardiner. These letters include previously unreleased writing to both Winifred Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth.

Nicholson's vibrant intellect, complete devotion to art, and association and friendship with some of the major luminaries of global Modernism, such as Mondrian, Henry Moore, and Picasso, are all readily apparent throughout. Ben Nicholson: Writings and Ideas is a great resource for anybody interested in the work of this important British artist and the era in which he worked. It includes reproductions of important works and chosen correspondence.
